There’s no doubt about it, Tokyo in Japan is huge and trying to decide which area to stay in when you’re solo travelling can be really overwhelming. Luckily the city has a great metro system so if you do find yourself outside of the city or the areas that you want to see, you’re usually only a train ride away.
If you’re looking for a cultural stay, make sure to try a capsule hotel, where you sleep in a pod for a night! They are small but are ideal if you are on a budget and just need a bed for the night. Staying in one is definitely an experience you shouldn’t miss when you’re in Tokyo.

Lightning Hotel – $
If you do want to try a capsule hotel, this is the one that I stayed in! It's located in Asakura, really close to the metro station, walking distance to the Senso-Ji Temple and just outside is one of the stops for the Hop on Hop Off Bus. The capsule room is on a female-only floor and is really quiet. They have separate bathrooms and a lounge room where you can make your noodles and relax. Plus it’s a really safe area to wander around at night through the warmly-lit back streets. * Check rates and availability: Lightning Hotel
Sakura Hostel Asakura – $
This hostel is a great choice if you’re looking for accommodation in Asakusa on a budget. It’s a short walk to the metro station, and just a quick train ride to the Tokyo Sky Tree which has amazing views of the city. Reception is open 24 hours, the staff speak English and there’s a kitchen if you want to cook your own noodles and food.
Plus you can leave your luggage if you have a late check out and catch up on washing your laundry too. There are curtains on your dorm bed for extra privacy and a cafe onsite with a cheap breakfast! Super Hotel Tokyo Otsuka – $$
This 3-star hotel is ideal for solos. As well as no kids allowed, each room has a private bathroom, a desk for planning your next day sightseeing and a TV for watching some cultural Japanese entertainment in the evenings. It’s near to Otsuka station and there’s a local supermarket nearby. Plus breakfast is included in the rate.
You may need to use Google translate when you check in if you don’t get the English-speakings staff and there’s a door code to enter your rooms but it’s a great place to stay. KOKO HOTEL Akabane Station – $$
You can’t get closer to a metro station that this hotel. It’s literally at the Akabane Station making it perfect for getting around the city. The hotel offers free beverages and have a lounge that is open until late. Plus there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby. The rooms have a fridge and give you your own pajamas. Choose from a standard double room or double room with a small double bed perfect for us solos! * Check rates and availability: KOKO HOTEL Akabane Station
Voga Corte Chidoricho – ($$ Minimum of 2 nights)
If you prefer to stay in an apartment instead of a hotel room, this 3-star property is a new property with everything you need for a comfortable stay. There’s a kitchen, dining table, washing machine and a desk if you need to work, plus a TV.
Located in a quiet neighbourhood, It is near a metro station but it can be quite far from the city centre depending on what you want to see. Note that there is a minimum of 2 nights stay. Akabane Holic Hotel – $$
Located near Akabane Park, and a 2 minute walk to the metro station, this hotel is close to the castle ruins and has a restaurant onsite where you can also order European food as well as Japanese.
It’s really clean, the beds are comfortable, and the rooms come with a fridge and toiletries. Plus there’s a spa (called an onsen) where you can relax and soak your tired muscles after a day of sightseeing. Choose from a single or double room. * Check rates and availability for Akabane Holic Hotel
