Parry Sound is a unique place in Canada, its location on the eastern shore of Georgian Bay in Northern Ontario lives up to its name of ‘the world-renowned jewel of the 30,000 islands.’
If you're looking for somewhere to stay in Ontario, Sunny Point Resort sits on the edge of Muskoka with 2,700 feet of waterfront and amazing views of the lake and during my trip to Canada, I was lucky enough to experience a stay within one of the cottages. Having only stayed for one night. I caught up with owner Andrew Vitch to find out what more this property had to offer…
1. You've been ranked Trip Advisor's number 1 in Parry Sound and number 4 in the whole of Canada for families. That's a great achievement. Congratulations!
Thank you. Sue and I are very excited. We do enjoy hosting families and think Sunny Point is a great place for a family vacation. However, we never expected this.
2. Tell us about the Sunny Point Resort
Sunny Point Resort is an 84-acre, waterfront “Cottage Resort” 2 hours North of Toronto, Ontario. There are 10 – three and four-bedroom cottages, an inn with 7 suites and a 7-bedroom luxury rental home all of which are waterfront across our 2700 feet of lakefront property. We have boats, canoes, kayaks, paddleboats, row boats, paddleboards, a beach, a water trampoline, a water slide, swimming areas, extensive floating docks, volleyball, basketball, tennis courts, mini putt, a recreation centre and some really neat hiking trails.
3. What makes you stand out from the competition?
Primarily we stand out among other Cottage Resorts due to our enormous amount of land, length of waterfront and size and condition of our cottages. Our place, at full occupancy, holds only about 100 people which is almost an acre of space for every guest. We can be full yet our guests receive a sense of privacy that they can't get elsewhere. Another difference is that we allow up to 2 dogs in our cottages without a weight restriction.
Sue and I are dog lovers ourselves and we know how difficult it is to find a nice place that allows pets. We really find that pet owners appreciate a nice place and tend to be very considerate of our property.
4. What is the appeal of Parry Sound?
Parry Sound is right on Georgian Bay, an incredible freshwater inlet off Lake Huron. The water is incredibly clean and the vistas are spectacular. We have among the best examples of the pink granite rock of the Canadian Shield all around us. There is a world-class performing concert and arts centre, plenty of restaurant choices, and a nice downtown for shopping. Of course, we are also home to the world's greatest hockey player, Bobby Orr, and there is the Bobby Orr Hall of Fame.
5. Is it just families that stay or do you also see many solo females?
We see more than just families. Other groups are seniors with or without a pet, girls travelling together as well as couples and solo girls. A big appeal for all types of guests is that with the vast amount of amenities we have coupled with nice accommodations and the lake, a traveller need not ever leave the resort, yet, can never have the feeling of being in one place. It is also incredibly safe here.
You are much more likely to be accosted by a bear than a thief! lol. Not that either has ever happened here. It's too bad when you visited us, that you couldn't have been here longer. There was so much for us to show you… we understand though. Girl About the Globe has a big itinerary. We do hope to see you again… and, that you will stick around a bit longer. I am sure you would enjoy it here and in Parry Sound.
6. Any plans for the future?
This is a retirement business for us. I know what you are thinking Girl; you think I am much too young to retire. From a physical age, yes. We sold off our other business interests to live off the proceeds and to run Sunny Point because we consider operating Sunny Point to be the most fun that work can be. From a point of view of what to do here, we are always making things better.
By being free from needing a big personal income from our business, we are able to invest a significant amount back into the property. We enjoy making things constantly better here. We know also that our guests like it too. Most of the improvements come directly from a guest's suggestion.
