Switzerland is such a fantastic country for solo travellers to visit. It's safe, has stunning scenery and an efficient transport system. Having spent time travelling through this country solo, I have included all my favourite accommodation, as well as recommendations from other women in our solo female community. What makes hostels or hotels in Switzerland solo female-friendly? They are clean, safe, friendly and welcoming and generally in a good location to get to.

Accommodation in Switzerland
There is a variety of accommodation in Switzerland. Whether you want to stay in an apartment, a cosy bed and breakfast or a traditional wooden Swiss chalet, there are many different options. You can choose a farm stay or stay overnight in a Benedictine Monastery. There are camping options here as well. Basel
The best area to stay in Basel Switzerland – The city of Basel is divided by the Rhine River. If you like to be near the sights and stay in the centre of town, then choosing Basel accommodation in the Old Town in Gorssbasel is one of the best areas. There are more restaurant options on this side and you're near to Market Square, the City Hall, and also the train station. The Old Town of Kleinbasel is on the other side of the river and is also a good area to stay in.
Basel Youth Hostel
Basel Youth Hostel in Basel Switzerland has a really cool contemporary design mixed with historical features. The beds are comfortable, breakfast is included and it is in a peaceful setting near a stream. It’s also near the Alban Gate in the heart of Basel so everything is walkable. The only downside to this Basel hostel is that there is only Wifi in the reception area. Choose from a bed in a dorm room or a single bed with a shared bathroom.

Bern
Where to stay in Bern – The heart of the old town is a good place to stay if you are short on time as it is more touristy and easy to see everything from here. Other good areas to stay in are Monbijou, Breitenrain, and Länggasse.
Bern Backpackers Hotel Glocke
For those on a budget, consider one of the hostels in Bern Switzerland. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in the centre of the city, this Bern hostel and backpackers hotel is in a great location. The staff are really friendly and they have female-only dorms. There is a nightclub downstairs so be prepared to party if you stay here.

Hotel Marthahaus
Hotel-Pension offers rooms with private or shared bathrooms and is popular with solos. There is free tea and coffee and a complimentary breakfast. Plus you also get a ticket for the bus and tram so you can get around the city but it’s only a 10-minute walk to the old town from here.

Max Aviation Apartments
If you need somewhere quiet these apartments are perfect. They are near the tram and there is a large garden to chill out in. The beds are comfy and the rooms are super clean, plus you can enjoy a view of either the garden or mountains. You may even get a cuddly bear in your room!

Geneva
Best area in Geneva to stay – The city centre is the best area to stay in as tourist attractions are within walking distance. For a bit of Italian flair stay in Carouge, described as a small Italy. Here you can eat and drink to your heart’s content and take an evening stroll around its Sardinian heritage. Pâquis is also a good area which is near the peninsula and beach.
Geneva Hostel
This hostel which was once a former school building is one of the best hostels in Geneva for solo travellers. It's located in the heart of Geneva near the beach and you’ll find a restaurant serving Swiss cuisine, and a common room with a TV to mingle with the other guests. Breakfast is included and they have female-only dorm rooms too.

City Hostel Geneva
Geneva City Hostel is one of the hostels in Geneva that is close to the main station. The hostel is really sociable and they offer discounts on train passes and offer daily movies. Dorm rooms are small with only 3-4 people in a room. They even have a laundry service and hair dryers for you to use. It's also one of the Geneva hostels with private rooms so you can upgrade if you need your own space.

Hôtel Bel'Espérance
If you prefer to be near the lakeshore for your accommodation in Geneva Switzerland, choose one of the Geneva hotels in this location. Hôtel Bel'Espérance is in a perfect location and also near to the old town. They offer single rooms and studios with a wardrobe, hairdryer and TV. Interlaken
Best area in Interlaken to stay – Matten is a good area to stay in with a couple of the sociable hostels located here.
Backpackers Villa Sonnenhof
With a homely feel, Backpackers Villa Interlaken is centrally located and includes breakfast in the price. The hostel has a fully equipped kitchen so you can make your own meals and you get free access to a swimming pool. It's one of the best hostels in Interlaken for solo travellers. Hotel Beausite
Friendly staff, beautiful views and gorgeous gardens to relax in, Hotel Beausite is one of the 3-star hotels in Interlaken. It offers clean and comfortable rooms and is only a 5-minute walk to the train station. Plus you may be able to see the paragliders as they take flight.

Ula’s Holiday Apartments
If you prefer your own apartments with panoramic views of the lake and mountains, Ula’s Holiday Apartments offers self-catering apartments. Situated 700 meters above Interlaken in Beatenberg, with the beauty of a Swiss Alpine village, a very friendly host and a bus stop just 5 minutes away.

Balmers Hostel
More than just a hostel, Balmers Hostel Interlaken also offers a tent village for camping, and activities for any kind of weather (not to mention a jacuzzi to relax in). It’s known as a party hostel so after tasting the locally brewed schnapps you can party in the onsite nightclub until the early hours. Balmers offer shared mixed, male-only or female-only dormitories (4,6,8 bedded) and also some smaller private rooms. They also have separate female showers and toilets.
All rooms are key card operated so only the people that are sleeping in your room can enter it. Safety boxes and lockers are offered at the back of the hostel. If you are looking to party in Switzerland, Balmers is not only ideal to meet other travellers but you literally have everything that you need within this gorgeous Interlaken hostel which oozes traditional swiss charm.

Lausanne
Best area to stay in Lausanne Switzerland – If you are looking to be near the tourist sites, La Cite district is a good area to stay in, but if you prefer to hang out with the locals then you may prefer a local neighbourhood instead.
Hotel du Raisin
This hotel is in a good location and close to the train station. The staff give you a travel pass for transportation when you check-in. The single room is ideal for a solo but they also offer studios that come with a kitchenette. There is a restaurant and a terrace to eat al fresco and an optional breakfast.

Lauterbrunnen
Where to stay in Lauterbrunnen – In Lauterbrunnen, you’ll find camping, hostels, hotels and self-catering apartments here. Anywhere in the village is a good place to stay as it's easily walkable.
Camping Jungfrau
This holiday park caters for any type of traveller whether you want to stay in a caravan, a cottage, a room or a dormitory. They have everything on site and gorgeous scenery all around. A shuttle bus runs to the train station from here.

Valley Hostel
This Lauterbrunnen Switzerland hostel is really popular with solo women. It’s in a great location close to the train station and there’s a supermarket nearby so you can save money on meals. Relax in the garden or book a tour through their tour desk. Choose a dorm room or a double room.

Hotel Schützen Lauterbrunnen
This typical Swiss chalet has a homely feel to it with comfy duvets, sloped ceilings and a fireplace. The hotel is family run and you can choose the half-board option or breakfast only. Rooms vary from a single with a shared bathroom to double rooms with a private bathroom.

Lucerne
Backpackers Luzern
Located in a quiet area, the shores of the lakes are within walking distance of this Lucerne hostel. This is one of the best hostels in Lucerne for solo females as there are female-only dorms with 2 or 4 beds and a lounge area to meet other guests. There is also the choice of private rooms with a shared bathroom.

Aparthotel Adler Luzern
This hotel also doubles up as a hostel. Close to Chapel Bridge, it is a few minutes walk to the lake. Comfortable and modern with good showers, the staff are helpful and some speak English. Choose from female-only dorms or a standard double.

Richemont Hotel
If you prefer to stay near the beach, the Richemont Hotel is just a short walk away and overlooks Lake Lucerne. All rooms have their own bathroom. This hotel is near to the ferry terminal but not that close to the city centre which is a 10-minute bus ride away. The breakfast here is quite costly.

Lugano
Where to stay in Lugano – If you prefer to be somewhere walkable then the city centre is a good place to stay. Outside of the city you can get different views of the city and the lake and be somewhere quieter. Lugano-Paradiso, for example, has good transport links and is just outside of the centre.
Youth Hostel Lugano Savosa
This hostel Lugano Switzerland is an oasis just 3 km outside of Lugano. Surrounded by gorgeous vegetation where you can hike, there is a swimming pool where you can cool off during the summer months or make friends with the other guests over a game of volleyball. They have female-only rooms as well as mixed dorms. Everything you need is nearby such as supermarkets and restaurants.

Zermatt
Where to stay in Zermatt – Zermatt is a great destination to choose for summer or winter. Its location at the foot of the Matterhorn makes it a stunning place to come. If you're hiking or skiing choose the Zermatt resort area, or if you want to reach all the attractions, stay within Zermatt Town.
Zermatt Youth Hostel Switzerland
This Zermatt hostel is a 15-minute walk to the railway station and also to the ski lifts. Plus you can see the Matterhorn from here. This is one of the best hostels in Zermatt for solo travellers if you're planning on skiing. You won’t just meet other backpackers here either as the hostel attracts families and groups of people too. Choose from a bed in a 6 or 8-bed dorm room or a double room if you prefer some privacy. The rooms have heating if it gets a bit cold but the hostel does have a few steps so be prepared if you have heavy luggage. Breakfast is included.

Best area in Zurich to stay – The Old Town is an ideal location to stay in, with gorgeous medieval architecture or stay in the artisan area of Niederdorf with a pedestrian-only street and lots of places to eat.
